Siobhan Benita has urged Londoners to listen to the medical and scientific experts, who have the most up-to-date information about how best to handle coronavirus.
Her comments were critical of ex-Tory cabinet minister, Rory Stewart, who she has accused of fuelling panic by calling for all schools to be closed.
Liberal Democrat Mayoral candidate, Siobhan Benita said:
"It is highly irresponsible of Rory Stewart to sow distrust in expert medical advice on coronavirus. To give his own advice based on 'instinct' rather than the latest scientific evidence-based on constant modelling is both arrogant and potentially dangerous. This is NOT a game. Londoners must listen to the medical and scientific experts who have the most up-to-date information about how best to handle coronavirus.
"Of course, I would support the shutdown of schools were that the official advice. But timing is key. Calling for it earlier than necessary isn't prudent but potentially reckless with wide-ranging consequences. This has been made clear by the Chief Medical Officer in the UK action plan.
"Closing schools would be part of a major national plan and would need to confront the issue of who then looks after the children of key workers such as doctors, nurses, police, firefighters and carers, as well as those for whom working from home is just not possible.
"I urge Londoners to watch the official advice closely and to pay attention to the medical and scientific experts."
