Siobhan Benita, the Liberal Democrat aiming to be London's next mayor, was in Brussels today to hold talks with EU Parliament Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt.
Ms Benita, who is confident her party's clear 'Stop Brexit' message in Remain-voting London will help propel her into City Hall next May, was accompanied by Caroline Pidgeon, LibDem London assembly member. As well as meeting with Guy Verhofstadt, they held a working lunch with Liberal Democrat MEPs and met other senior EU officials as well as mayoral representatives from European cities.
After her meeting with Guy Verhofstadt, Siobhan Benita said:
"Guy and I had a very constructive meeting. He was clear that the UK's latest Brexit proposals were inadequate and agrees with me that freedom of movement between the UK and Europe has been beneficial.
"We discussed the specific needs of London which relies so heavily on the contribution of EU citizens who play such a vital role in making our capital flourish. EU citizens build our homes, nurse our sick, serve our coffee and pay for our public services. Guy and I agreed to do everything we can to protect their rights and those of UK citizens in Europe. London thrives because it’s a European as well as a British city. We intend to keep it that way."
Guy Verhofstadt MEP, Brexit Coordinator for the European Parliament, said:
"It was great to meet the Lib Dem London Mayoral candidate Siobhan Benita, who is fighting to keep London European. We both agree on the benefits of freedom of movement for the capital. Wishing her and the Lib Dems all the best for their campaigns in Liberal London."
