Responding to Sadiq Khan's comments today that he will end the tube fares freeze if he is re-elected, Liberal Democrat candidate for Mayor of London Siobhan Benita said:
"Sadiq Khan's fares freeze was never going to be sustainable but it has wreaked havoc on Transport For London's finances.
"The freeze has not only put a huge strain on the purse strings of London's transport network, delaying vital improvements, but it also benefited tourists and not thousands of Londoners commuting from the outer boroughs.
"It is right that bus fares remain frozen and this will also be part of my offer to Londoners because people need an affordable travel option. It’s disappointing, however, that as Sadiq Khan has failed to tackle congestion across the city the number of us getting on the bus every morning has fallen.
"We need to improve our bus network, making it both an affordable and dependable way to travel as part of a wider package that ensures as many Londoners as possible are using public transport to go about their daily lives in the most sustainable way."
