London LibDem spokeperson and mayoral candidate, Siobhan Benita responds to the rough sleeping figures in London rising to record levels:
"Every individual who is sleeping on the street is a tragedy that should shame us all. The fact that homeless numbers are rising fast in London and that 22 people every day are sleeping rough in the capital for the first time is totally unacceptable. After nearly a full term as Mayor, Sadiq Khan's rough sleeping strategy has clearly failed. We need to know why.
Fresh action is urgently required. The priority now must be to get more specialist outreach teams on the streets offering mental health and addiction support as well as increasing the number of emergency acommodation shelters. And we must revoke the antiquated Vagrancy Act that treats homeless people as criminals. Instead we need to show compassion for everyone who finds themselves on the streets, providing the care and support that will make a sustainable difference."
